  1. A. Skills

Through this art class, the learners are being able to develop various skills.

    1. The students are “reading with eyes” which means they are observing and understanding the content. Here, the meaning of the word ‘reading’ is being altered to ‘understanding’ which can be as a part of ‘creativity’ as a new meaning is established which is beyond the boundaries.

    2. The listening abilities play an important role as the teacher directed the students about what is going to happen in the class before entering the classroom.

    3. The students collaborated to read the piece of artwork where their communication skills are being developed through teamwork.

    4. With the ‘ooohs & aahs’ while viewing others artwork displays the learners ‘curiosity’ to learn, expand and understand the peers point of view.

    5. The learners are asked to give opinions and critique ,at first, the masters artwork and later the peers. For giving opinions, the students must reflect upon the questions, empathize others and think critically before giving a constructive feedback. An appreciative feedback motivates the learner to progress.

To conclude, the motor and social skills along with cognitive and meta cognitive abilities are being developed in this art class.

  2. B. Potential theories:

This interdisciplinary instruction method encompasses various theories.

Primarily it is based on the theory of Social Constructivism proposed by Vygotsky. The aspect of social interaction: teamwork and collaboration , use of psychological tool : language, scaffolding: teacher as well as peer are a part of this theory. The environment is an integral part of the learning process where the learners construct knowledge based on the social interactions. All the learners are active participants and communication is a crucial factor in this art class which can be related to the Participation Model of Learning.

Secondly the theory of Experiential learning put forth by David Kolb is also considered as the learners are ‘learning by doing’ and are having a ‘hands-on approach to learning’.

The ‘Modeling’ by the teacher plays a crucial role which can be related to the Social Learning theory of Albert Bandura where the learners observe the adults, extract the information by observing using their cognitive abilities.

One can also state that the prior knowledge is activated in this art class as the learners are already aware about certain concepts like ‘solar panel’ , ‘electricity’ which was exhibited in the art work. This can be related to Piaget’s theory of constructivism where the learners develop their cognitive structures (schemas) with the evolution of age, physical and social environment.

  3. C. Benefits for the teachers

The interdisciplinary approach to instruction can be proved beneficial when the teachers of different disciplines collaborate to formulate the teaching strategies so as to benefit the learners.

    1. Through interdisciplinary approach, teachers get an opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge about the other subjects and also get a new perspective about their own subject.

    2. It’s an excellent way to interact and collaborate with colleagues who share the common learning goals. It also gives the teachers an opportunity to be creative and think out of the box related to a single content area.

    3. The time can be effectively managed. Teacher can save the revision or priming time as other teachers would have continued with the same line of concept.

    4. Interdisciplinary approach involves ‘assessment as learning’ where the teacher acts as a guide. This can be beneficial as the learners take the responsibility of their own learning and the teacher can utilize the time for 'assessment for learning'.

    ReplyDelete
  4. D. Changes required to adopt interdisciplinary approach

    1. We need to interact and collaborate with each other to adopt such an interdisciplinary approach.

    2. We should adopt the method of ‘assessment for learning’ i.e the formative assessment more frequently. Like in the video the teacher asks one of the student to be careful about the horizon line which acted as a formative assessment.

    3. The system of feedback must be implemented where the word ‘criticise’ , which has a negative connotation should be replaced with the word ‘critique’ which would give a wider scope of analysis of the work: positive or negative.

    4. Asking questions helps in channelizing the thoughts and makes the learners aware about the expected outcomes.

    5. Have a motivating and vibrant environment with quotes of famous personalities displayed around in the classroom or in the school would give the learners an opportunity to reflect and discuss about the same. Like the art class had a famous quote by a world renowned painter Picasso, “every child is an artist”

  5. a) Art is a speechless language. Art depicts lots of things without words. Art is an expression of thoughts, emotions, ideas. Through art oneself can speak incredibly about the surrounding around us. Hence, it is concluded that art is an universal language. Art is a skill which commence from an imagination, henceforth art develops an imaginative skill. An imagination can be deliberated uncloudedly ,undimmed and in crystal form through creativity. Thereupon, art flourishes creativity skill of oneself too. Creativity is well formulated through choice of colours, structured and well framed pictures wherefore it promotes an individual analytical, systematic and cognitive, metacognitive skills. Accordingly an art is intact and unreduced class of skills. Where also learners contact, match , surround themselves with their peers which also advances their collaborative and enhances their social skills.

  6. b)Art is a thorough and integrated approach for learning skills. An art class portrays amalgamation of various skills. Taking into consideration diverse skill an art class emphasize on imaginative and creative skill in pristine manner. Hence constructivism theory applications is pioneering action in an art class.
To venture upon in developing skills through art practicing systematic, analytical and cognitive, metacognitive path is nowhere port sided. Wherefore theories of cognitive development also exist. Where learners collaborates to match and work for producing something new and extravagant here social learning theory comes forefront.
On this account an art class is bundle of skills accomplished through theories.

    c) Interdisciplin is a potential gateway. Whether it is field of teaching or any other pursuits. It is a convincing and forceful act for an implementor. From an educator field of vision it’s a triumph. Interdisciplinary method of instruction will serve an exceptional betterment for teaching.
It will be a service of unconventional method for teaching and learning. Teachers can prosper in their field and fashion of working by exercising interdisciplinary approach. Teachers can fondle with miscellaneous factors and principles at once by practicing interdiscipline way of instruction. It will be a headway in their teaching approach and strike a noticeable positive outcome and consequences in their avenue.

    d) For adopting an interdisciplinary approach in our professional practice, we should very first discontinue and breach from our traditional method of teaching. We should focus on the specific positive outcome of this method. We should centre our mind towards learners and their way of acceptance. For grabbing the attention of the learners throughout the teaching – learning process, as a teacher we should keep turning on their excitement towards the core of the content and to intensify their focus more and perk their interest on.

    1. Assessment for learning:

Assessment for learning is a practiced mainly exercised by teachers to analyse their planning strategies of teaching and modulate it as per the requirement of a learner. In classroom teacher chiefly emphasize this to conclude student progress and their learning outcomes. It is not only a powerful tool for a teacher but also for a student. As student can reflect over their learning strategies and patterns after submitting their assessments which also benefits them to perform better in their next upcoming summative assessments.

Assessment for learning is a most effective engine which teachers can avail for fuelling the student development. It depends and varies from individual teachers the way they wants to conduct it in their unique fashion. It also helps to fill the gap between between a teacher and the learner.
Teacher can assess this either through any practical work or in general. Which also mould the learner to become an active participant and engage with their peers for accomplishing the given task to them. Henceforth it will hatch a learner overall advancement and evolution for the betterment in the future. Here learner himself can reinforce his lacking qualities from budding to ripening stage.

I conclude my above stated points as a whole saying that assessment for learning is forceful gadget for development of teacher and a student together to enhance in their knowledge and to improve further.

  7. The children are learning to make connections, predictions and visualize.
Other skills being developed are critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and team work, communication, imagination, language, understanding emotions, questioning, observation, reflection, metacognition.

The potential theories used are social constructivism, experiential learning, active learning, learning as participation, reflection, metacognition.

The teacher benefits from interdisciplinary approach to instruction in various ways. Each discipline supports the other forming a better foundation towards learning, which in turn supports the teacher to help the students understand the topic better and form deeper understanding and well developed skills.
The teachers from various disciplines act as a team working towards the same goal of educating the children and teaching them various life skills in the process.
It also may be helpful to avoid the child getting bored (especially if he/she dislikes the subject) and helps him/her to develop interest by linking the topic to the subject he/she may like.
There are no limitations to teaching, which may be experienced if the instruction is subjected to only one discipline. There are various possible directions in which the class may be steered. This also creates more spontaneity and the students may find it more interesting and fun.
These are just a few benefits of possibly many benefits that may come from an interdisciplinary approach to instruction.

To adopt an interdisciplinary approach would take some time and practice.
Some things that could be done are to not limit oneself to just one way of thinking and be open to various ideas.
Planning ahead and researching on a topic to gain different perspectives may also help.
During instruction, it may help to not be very rigid with the plan and be open to different ideas from the students and be flexible in how the instruction is delivered.
Being open minded as a teacher can help immensely with an interdisciplinary approach to teaching.

  8. A) Every child is an artist. In art class, Students develop picture reading skills. Through pictures, students describe the mood of the picture, it may be “sad”, “happy” etc. Through language they may state how many people they see, what they must be doing, using words like – “atmosphere”, “prediction” and “solar panel”. This develops their speaking and language skills. Students give feedback to their peers, playing the role of a critique. The initial feedback is preferably appreciative, then an explanation for their opinion (why/how they are thinking so) and then their suggestions. They’re communicating their views in a peer group (Vygotsky Theory), collaborating their knowledge and creating the artwork - this develops their critical-thinking skills. They can decide to change the mood of the picture they’re being shown. They also use artistic elements to represent things like “electricity on solar panels” using glitter. Students express their language by giving suggestions (listening skills of other students develop), this teaches them the importance of listening to their teachers and their peers. They gave feedback, observe peers’ work – which demonstrated their curiosity to learn. In this art class, children also developed metacognitive skills, critical-thinking skills, giving ideas to change colouring of the picture of the house to change its mood.

    B) Students work in groups, practice teamwork and collaboration - this demonstrates Vygotsky Theory. Each child is actively involved in learning, they’re active listeners, learners, giving their answers (ZPD). Students do their artwork in a creative manner - this is experiential learning and gives hands-on experience.

    C) For teachers teaching different subjects to the same group of students, an interdisciplinary approach is advantageous. If a particular student likes a certain subject, and a part of that subject is implemented in another subject, the student develops an interest in the other subject by relating their knowledge of the subject they like. This helps develop various skills – students become interactive, the learning process becomes creative, critical-thinking skills develop, they give suggestions/feedback and develops metacognition. Teachers get an opportunity to develop their professional skills and improve their subject’s content knowledge according to learner’s requirements. Teachers save their time in revision or discussion/formative assessment. Class will be disciplined due to the integration of all subjects into each other, and learning becomes more meaningful. This enables students having different disciplinary interests learn and work together and this also helps develop listening and speaking skills.

    D) Teachers should interact with teachers of every other discipline and discuss how they can integrate the content of one subject can be merged with another subject’s content. During formative assessment, there should be opening and closing questions sessions which will ensure students’ active participation. Teachers should be ready with subject-related and content-based questions which are age-relevant so that students can answer with their individual opinions. Along with “Wh.-” questions, asking descriptive questions will help develop thinking skills of students. Feedback/suggestions in the form of critique must be positive and appreciative.

    1. Thank you Ms Chhaya for your response! You have made some important observations in your analysis of the video.

      a) I'd like to make one recommendation in regard to the way you have expressed your observations: If you are trying to point to different ideas, make sure you make clear distinctions between them. For instance, in your response to prompt a), you have pointed out majority of skills students are learning but the distinction between them is not clear. In such cases, it may help to express your views using a list rather than a paragraph. A list is generally preferred over a paragraph when the number of different points that need to be mentioned exceeds a certain limit.

      b) In your response to prompt b), you mention "Each child is actively involved in learning, they’re active listeners, learners, giving their answers (ZPD)." I am not able to see the relevance of ZPD here. Maybe I'm missing somethings here?

      c) Excellent response to the prompt c). Very well articulated.

      d) In your response to prompt d), you mention "...asking descriptive questions will help develop thinking skills of students." I don't quite follow how this might happen. Descriptive questions require learners to simply narrate an event or facts from memory. It does not require them to think, reflect or analyze these events or facts. So, the skill they will develop through descriptive questions would be language/communication skills, but not their thinking skills.

  9. A. Skills being developed in the class are:
Observation skills, visualisation, analysing skills, prediction skills, reading skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, creativity, curiosity, skill of appreciation, introspection skills, interdisciplinary skills, critical thinking skills, modelling skills, reflection skills.

    B. Potential theories used in this method of instruction are: active learning, metacognition, social constructivism, modelling, peer scaffolding, experiential learning, reflective learning.

    C. Benefits of adopting interdisciplinary approach:
Interdisciplinary approach provides the teachers the opportunity to come up with creative techniques/ ideas to go about a particular concept.
It helps in viewing learning as a whole wherein the teacher is able to explore, link, relate, learn about various disciples which leads to the enhancement of skills not only in learners but the teacher too.
It is time effective as concepts from different subjects are integrated together and they are being taught simultaneously.
In a way it also supports differentiated learning (e.g a child not interested in a particular subject can be taught by integrating it with a subject in which he/she is interested.) This helps to sustain the learning interest amongst learners which is eventually beneficial for the teachers.

    D. Firstly, the teachers should understand the changing role of teacher in current education system. The teachers should come out of the prejudiced way of teaching and be must be open to new ideas, suggestions of teaching and learning.
The teachers must adopt collaborative sessions wherein teachers from various disciplines come up and discuss new strategies to support interdisciplinary teaching, focus on the progress that the learners are making, how learners respond to different learning strategies, what techniques suit individual learners and what changes need to be made to ensure the best possible learning.

  10. 'Art as text : bridging lit...'

    A) Skills are being developed in art class :-

The following skills are developed in art class :-

Visualising picture, reading picture , making connections , understanding the mood off picture or person , recognizing different colours , guessing , critical thinking , learn from peers and handling peer pressure , making artistic decisions , metacognitive skills can be used by teacher , giving evidence to support their statement , listening , questioning analysing , collaborative skill , scaffolding , and critical view in positive way .

    B) Potential theories :-

Vygotsky's socio cultural theory of human learning described that learning is a social process and origination of human intelligence in society . Vygotsky's theoretical framework is that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition . Think - pair - share learning strategy / theory is applicable here . Think -pair- share is a collaborative learning strategy used to easily monitor student's understanding of content or language objectives ( Echevarria , Vogt , short 2014 ). It gives all students a chance to think and discuss . Teacher can model the think -pair -share strategy before students participate . According to the Gerlach , "collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is naturally social act in which the participants talk among themselves ( Gerlach, 1994) . It is through the talk that learning occurs .

    C) The teacher's benefit from interdisciplinary approach: -

The interdisciplinary approach is one in which different subjects are taught simultaneously. Example - Students draw. In this, students draw lines. Some students use a three-dimensional, somewhere square, somewhere round, somewhere tall, somewhere high, somewhere small to make a picture. These shapes are related to the mathematics topic. Through this, the student learns mathematics. If the student discovers information about the history of mathematics and art, the student also learns history. In which place and in which area are objects of this size? It is related to the subject of geography in a way. On the pretext of art, the student uses language when he speaks something about his picture. The student uses Hindi, English or any other language. These languages remain as a subject in our curriculum. A person also learns language under the pretext of art. This video states that the lighter color reflects mood. This special knowledge is related to science. People are seen listening to music in the crowd. This view further reinforces the feeling of happiness. In this way, the student learns many subjects on the basis of a theme.

    D) Changes required in our views ,attitude and culture to adopt an interdisciplinary approach in our professional practice :-

We should think that we are not teaching just a subject . We are teaching many subjects at a time . By using metacognitive ability a teacher can prepare the lesson plan and apply that plan such a way in which other related subjects can be taught simultaneously . teacher should think that he is a guide / facilitator . Teacher should be open minded . If required teacher should accept his mistakes . This way students will also learn to accept mistakes . Teacher should take feedback in positive way for improvement because there is always scope for improvement .

  11. Interdisciplinary methods of learning
Art is a universal language every child is able to make connections and read a piece of art and give their opinion finding evidence in that work as they are able to read the visuals .
Every educator must incorporate in their teaching reading in different ways like music, physical education ,science, maths, literature ,social studies through art piece students are taught to read the pictures but not with mouth but with their eyes ,each group of students are given picture with a question so they think about the question with discussions questions on the observations and prior knowledge.
It helps in constructing the knowledge which becomes meaningful as they think about the question so language is developed, they learn to express their ideas and apply their thoughts, metacognition is developed with collaboration and group discussion. They also learn to respect about others ideas, different strategies are used to make connections like visual ,prediction ,inference these are the same strategies that are required to read a piece of art.
Art can also be related to emotions and feelings ,moods and light colour tones which are related to sad or happy as they showed evidence in their work .learners had to produce on the work which leads to critical thinking and metacognition ,they also learn to relate and make connections from abstract thinking to real life.
Teachers is asking questions where the learners developed a habit to reflect and applied their work developing to constructivism ,meaningful knowledge, which they can recall and retain for long term.
The teacher also asked to reply giving feedbacks which help them to critique each others work, so peer assessment which helps the learners to learn more quickly and better as basically they are of the same age. The teacher is also doing formative assessment with scaffolding by giving them lots of words for appreciation again language is improved during the activity. The learners to gain confidence of their work with motivation, learners find the cross curricular connections very interesting so they remain focused on the task .
A lot of vocabulary transfer over mood, tones ,atmosphere ,prediction which helps the learner in accelerating academic learning and developing social and emotional ,so art can be used to boost the learners to learn and it is a way to teach academic content .
Transferable skills like critical thinking ,communication helps learners to make connections between ideas and concepts resulting in meaningful learning ,helps in deepening the learning experience . highly motivated so it is rooted in life experiments experiences giving authentic learning constructivism theory about how people learn as they create their own understanding and knowledge of the world through experience and reflection, teamwork ,collaboration, communication .David Kolb theory as learners are doing by hands on experience this is also relates to Bandura theory of observation where the learners is observing the teachers are and the learner is learning .This approach is sure to ignite a spark of enthusiasm and address learning difference for learners .

    2. The teacher benefits from the interdisciplinary approach in following ways
      * it makes teaching learning process more interactive
      * it also helps to make learning process more meaningful for e.g if a learner is not interested in a particular subject that skill can be taught by integrating it with a subject in which the learner is interested.
This approach slowly and gradually builts in learners the imporatance of each and every subject as they start building the links and importance of it.

    3. D) The changes that we the teachers need are:-
      * we should collaborate with others on weekly or daily basis
      * we should be open for the change
      * we should take the feedback given by our colleagues positively.

    a) What skills are being developed in the art class?
Ans; This was I feel a special art class where learners not only learn how to be artistic but also developed various skills. Firstly they develop
linguistic skills: as they share their thoughts by observing the picture
reading skills: Here learners not only read but also try to read pictures
learning skill: as they try to learn from the art piece provided to them by their rt teacher
communication skill;as they share their views and ideas
visual skills: They also develop their visual skills on keen observation.
prediction skills: learners try to predict from the drawings given to them in a collaborative way
analyzing skill; learners try to analyze the given picture just by their acute observation so observatory skills too
reflective skills: here learners also gave their reflection
deeper understanding skills; as teacher probe questions to them to apply it on their own art work
critical thinking: As learners got a chance provided by the teacher for gallery display, they got chance too visualize others work and gave their feedback on the same
So it was an holistic overall development of the learners just in an Art block which was truly inspiring.

    b) What potential theories were used in creating this instruction method?

The potential theories used in this method of instruction are:
    active learning
    metacognition
    social constructivism
    modelling
    peer scaffolding
    experiential learning
    reflective learning
    ZPD
    Vygotsky Theory.

    c) How does the teacher benefit from interdisciplinary approach to instruction?

Not only the teacher but the learners are also beneficial by adopting this method of “Inter disciplinary approach of learning”. Learners here understand the concept with deep meaning. They develop various skills as mentioned in my above answer. There was a mutual collaboration among the learners as everyone was involved with the same goal. There was a variety of perceptions as many brains work on the same so they had lot of variety of thoughts and answers to the same picture. They also had a feeling of respecting each other’s feeling. It also was active learning so they were engaged throughout the session, so was the teacher by scaffolding their perceptions.

    d) What changes would we, the teachers, need to make in our views, attitudes and culture so as to adopt such an interdisciplinary approach in our professional practice?

We, as a teacher would like to adopt many things but at times we are restricted to follow certain rules and regulations. We do have limitations as per time constraints. We are also restricted by certain norms. Firstly the culture or you may say the background from where our learners come from need an instant change, an upbringing pattern that they follow, the way they think, they should be ready to accept the change positively. We the teachers, parents, school all should be ready for the change. There should be a holistic approach towards the efforts taken by the teacher.

    Art as interdisciplinary instruction
Art is a universal medium through which we can develop many skills. Learners can understand and relate to art which gives them success, happiness and confidence.
When the learners are listening to the teacher's instructions their listening skills are developing. While doing the activity the learners are using observation skills, creativity skills, thinking skills, cognitive skills and problem solving skills to ask questions, make predictions and inferences. They are building their literacy skills. After doing the activity the learners have gained confidence by doing the activity independently. When the learners are doing peer assessment there is use of communication skills, emotions, critique, empathy, tolerance, speaking skills, vocabulary building and metacognition. Learners are reflecting on their piece of work as well as the work of peers and relating to real life experiences.
Theories - Firstly the teacher is modeling not only the behavior ( Bandura) but also showing the learners the type of questions they need to ask themselves and their peers. She also models motivation ( Maslow) by giving positive feedback. Here the teacher is a facilitator helping the struggling learners to be successful and confident (Social constructivism, Vygotsky). As the learners are persuing the goal set by the teacher they are using metacognition strategies to construct their own knowledge (Constructivism, Piaget) by reaching the goal. Learners are learning from individual as well as peers (Experiential learning, Kolb). Active learning keeps the learners engaged.

The teacher benefits as the learners are actively enjoying and constructing their own learning by keeping themselves engaged.

We should scaffold learning and keep the learners actively engaged so they enjoy learning.

  16. Art is basically a universal language ,most of the art work is self-explanatory .Every child can read art as it is a visual and every child can be successful, learning through art can also help students learn who has special education needs
    1) The students are learning, communication/collaborative skills where they need to interact with the peers and teachers for the art activity which develop their social skills -Vygotsky theory of learning on social constructivism i.e cognitive development by social interaction.

    2) While students are drawing and painting their learning in more of the ‘Experiential learning ‘
Which was given by David Kolb (Hands on minds on)

    3) Analysing the artwork/critical thinking –By analysing the art work students can understand emotions related to the art ,the co-relation between the colour and the emotions , the students will try predict what is that particular art depicting or conveying .

    4) Presentation skills /observation skills /motor skills : Students will learn ways of presenting a particular art work which types of colour they will use ,which type of structures is needed for completing that particular art for eg for depicting face the will make a circle ,square is the art work consist of doors or windows ,triangle which will indicate mountain etc.

Through various interdisciplinary approach a teacher can help student develop interest in a particular subject and help in co-relation which is useful for higher order thinking
For example from art activity students can learn maths (geometry) where they can study about shape, size and structures .In the field of science where students need to draw biology diagrams and structures or writing an essay on the given art work .
Interdisciplinary approach helps students to understanding the topic in a better way and could have a deeper meaning towards whatever they have learnt .Interdisciplinary approach also helps in saving time as teachers need not teach the topic repetitively. It also help to develop interest by linking one topic or a lesson to another topic and also relating to local examples .
